The award will be shared among the 347 scientists who worked on the innovative project, which produced the very first image of a black hole. The data behind the image – which could confirm or at least ask important questions about our understanding of the universe – was equivalent to the number of selfies that 40,000 people could take during their lifetime.

According to the director of the project, Shep Doeleman, the revolutionary image marks only the beginning of the media moments of a black hole. Talk to AFPDoeleman said: "What I predict, is that by the end of the next decade, we will be producing high-quality, real-time films on black holes that not only reveal their appearance, but how they act on the cosmic scene. " Indeed, the team is already working on processing the data needed to produce the first video – probably rudimentary – of a black hole, which could be revealed next year.
