InSight lander NASA may have recorded a marsquake

The space agency attributes much of the merit of the probable discovery to the design of the seismometer in question. The seismic experience for interior structure has multiple insulating barriers designed to limit the influence of changes in wind and weather, allowing it to record subtle tremors without having to sink deep into the ground. The weakest events were captured using very sensitive very wideband sensors.

Researchers are still trying to determine the exact cause of apparent marsquake and expect to share more detailed results in the future. What is available now is, however, remarkable – this suggests that InSight is paying off quickly by revealing aspects of Mars that were not accessible to the old rovers.
