Less than 0.01% of vaccinated Americans have developed a severe case of breakthrough COVID, CDC says

According to the latest data released by the CDC, less than 0.01% of those vaccinated developed COVID-19 infections, leading to serious health complications or death.

As of August 2, more than 164 million people had been fully immunized against the disease, CDC figures show. Less than 0.001% of this population suffered severe or fatal cases of COVID when they contracted it after vaccination. Since the vaccine was distributed, the agency has received reports of 7,525 patients with breakthrough infections from the COVID-19 vaccine who have been hospitalized or have died.

“Cases of vaccine breakthrough are expected. COVID-19 vaccines are effective and are an essential tool in bringing the pandemic under control. However, no vaccine is 100% effective in preventing disease in people who are vaccinated. There will be a small percentage of fully vaccinated people who will still get sick, be hospitalized or die from COVID-19, ”the CDC wrote.

People aged 65 or older have suffered the majority, about 74%, of the serious infections reported. About 21% of the approximately 1,500 people who died after contracting COVID after vaccination have been reported as asymptomatic or unrelated to COVID, the CDC has confirmed.

Currently, the CDC uses the REDCap database to report cases, “where designated investigators from the state health department can enter, store and manage data from cases under their jurisdiction.” Going forward, the CDC plans to move to the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (NNDSS) to account for vaccine breakthrough cases.

As of May, the CDC has only been monitoring hospitalized or fatal cases rather than all vaccine breakthrough cases. “This change will help maximize the quality of data collected on cases of the greatest clinical and public health importance,” the organization said.

While a total of 10,262 vaccine infections have been reported to the CDC by 46 U.S. states and territories as of April 30, 2021, only a fraction of those cases have been shown to be life-threatening or warrant urgent medical attention. Almost 3,000 of these vaccine-ruptured infections were asymptomatic, 995 resulted in hospitalization and 160 resulted in death.
