The ever-green Porsche 911 needs a new look and, after a series of increasingly revealing photos and photo leaks, we now have the new version 992 in all its splendor. The eighth generation of Zuffenhausen's iconic sports car, with a rear engine, has been completely refurbished with a new look, a turbocharged engine and new technologies.
We'll start from the outside, where the 992 follows a scalable design while referring to some classic clues. At the front, the bumper closure now passes under the round LED headlights instead of crossing them, while the hood has a central recess. These two characteristics have been taken since the beginning of the 911s.
The body is much wider than before – 45 mm longer at the front, in fact – to house wheels measuring up to 20 inches at the front and 21 inches at the front. ;back. The rear width, which was previously wider on AWD models, has been standardized to emphasize the tapered center section. The smooth surface on the sides is now intact thanks to the retractable door handles.
The full-width rear lights of all-wheel-drive models are now a standard feature of the lineup, complemented by the wider active rear spoiler. Key features include the vertical center brake light as well as a blackened bumper section with large oval tailpipes. Apart from the front and rear fascias, the body panels are now entirely made of aluminum.
Inside, the new 911 picks up other new Porsche models such as the Panamera, Cayenne and Macan, with a bluff, a horizontal dash and a large center console. In front of the driver, new digital instruments frame the central analog rev counter; Beside, the touch screen of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) multimedia system is now measuring 10.9 inches.
The PCM itself has been reorganized and includes a new online navigation system with data from the crowd – the company calls this data in swarm – as well as connectivity from the smartphones Porsche Connect Plus. There are also five shortcut buttons below the screen to access the important functions of the vehicle, as well as new seats and a mini shift lever for the dual-clutch PDK transmission.
That brings us to what's under the hood – or rather to what's under the bonnet of the rear engine. For the moment, only the Carrera S and 4S models have been detailed so far, and both feature a revised six-cylinder turbocharger with unspecified capacity (3.0 liters in version 991 currently renovated) to reach 450 hp. It's 30 times more than before.
All thanks to an improved injection process and a new turbocharger and intercooler arrangement. From launch, the only available transmission will be a new eight-speed PDK, but a manual should come later – we doubt that Porsche is also abandoning its purist fan base.
Naturally, the increase in power comes with increased performance, the S taking only 3.7 seconds to reach 100 km / h (3.6 seconds for the 4S), or 0.4 seconds faster that & # 39; before. That leaves another 0.2 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono, and both cars reach a maximum of 308 km / h for the S and 306 km / h for the 4S. Fuel consumption is estimated at 8.9 liters per 100 km on the S and 9.0 liters per 100 km on the 4S.
Last but not least is security, and the 911 has been significantly improved in this regard. The first step is the new Wet mode, which is prompted to the driver through sensors that detect water on the road; it then conditions the stability control systems accordingly. There are also standard warning and brake assist systems with autonomous emergency braking, as well as a night vision assist system and adaptive cruise control with Stop-and-Go function.
