KUALA LUMPUR: Dr. Mahathir Mohamad condemned the violence and stormy demonstrations taking place in front of the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Subang Jaya, and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice.
He said that it was clear that the incidents were criminal and non-racial.
"The question of race and religion does not arise at all, although it is the relocation of a temple," says a statement released today by the Office of the Prime Minister.
Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Seafield, along the Damansara-Puchong Road (LDP), had gathered hundreds of young people to protest his planned move based on a high court consent judgment in 2014.
Late last night, a protest outside the temple quickly turned unruly after the fire of a car. A firefighter was also seriously injured after being assaulted by a crowd while he was attempting to extinguish the fire.
The crowd also attacked the offices of One City, the company owning the land where the temple is located, smashing glass doors and windows with stones.
The temple was to be relocated on November 22 as part of an agreement between One City, the Selangor State Government and two claimants to the temple leadership, K Chellapa and M Nagaraju.
However, a rival faction of the Nagaraju-led temple insisted that the temple remain at its current location instead of being moved about 3 km away.
