Lynas Corporation (Lynas), which processes rare earths at its plant in the Gebeng Industrial Zone in Kuantan, will temporarily shut down next month.
The decision was made at its annual general meeting in Sydney, Australia, yesterday after its CEO, Amanda Lacaze (above) reported at the meeting that Malaysia had not allowed the company to increase its production of lanthanide.
However, Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh disputed this claim, saying that the Malaysian government had not yet made a decision on the plant's operations.
"Personally, I am not aware of Lynas' request to increase lanthanide production at its Kuantan plant.
"If Lynas wants to close temporarily … it's their prerogative." Perhaps cutting costs or it's a marketing move to increase profit margin.
"There are also many public holidays in December in Australia, where many companies are closing their businesses for the Christmas and New Year holidays," she said in a statement.
She added that the main concern of Malaysians and the Malaysian government was how the factory would dispose of of more than one million tons of radioactive and toxic waste from the factory.
