KUCHING: A 21-year-old man from Kota Sentosa is the latest victim of rabies in Sarawak after confirmation by a clinical test on Tuesday 27 November.
Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, Director General of Health, said the victim was bitten by a stray dog on October 4 and did not wash the wound or seek medical treatment. She had only bought a drug at a pharmacy to apply it on the wound.
On November 21, the patient had back pain and said he had fallen the previous day, and he did not say he had been bitten by a dog.
"On November 24, he was admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital (GHS) when his legs became weakened.After examination, he found symptoms of hydrophobia (fear of water) , aerophobia (afraid of fresh air) and confusion.
"He is currently being treated and closely monitored by clinical specialists at GHS," said Dr. Noor Hisham in a statement released Wednesday (Nov. 28).
This brings to 14 the number of rabies victims in Sarawak since the declaration of a home on June 30, causing 12 deaths.
As of November 25, the state government had declared 54 areas of all divisions, except Limbang, infected with rabies.
