The demand for the iPhone XR and the iPhone XS remains low despite the holiday season. As a result, Apple had to reduce the volume of component orders for both models.
This had a domino effect on the supply chain, according to industry sources, several Apple suppliers (many from Taiwan) had to revise their results. Some even had to lay off staff to deal with orders below expectations.
Largan Precision, a provider of camera lenses for the iPhone, has estimated that its November revenues would be down from October, according to DigiTimes. While Career Technology, a flexible printed circuit board provider for the iPhone, recently laid off 110 workers to cope with the reduction in orders.
Most other partners in the iPhone supply chain are expected to see their revenue decline in November as well.
Most telling is Apple's decision to no longer disclose the number of units sold in its earnings reports. It is apparently an offer to shift the attention of the actual number of units sold on the amount of money that can be obtained from each unit sold.
Recently, Apple had reported relaunching the production line of the iPhone X to meet the contractual requirements of Samsung Display. Apple would have a minimum order requirement for its OLED panels given the lukewarm sales of the iPhone XR and the iPhone XS.
The iPhone X was shut down shortly after the announcement of the iPhone XR and the iPhone XS.
This is not the first time that Apple has reintroduced an abandoned model into production. It was not long ago, Apple had reintroduced the iPhone 6 into our market as a new "entry-level" device. They also increased the basic storage from 16 to 32 GB.
