The developer's lawyer among the 30 people arrested for violence at the temple

Selangor police chief Mazlan Mansor said the young detainees early this morning were released because they were "harmless".

PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested so far 30 people as a result of the violence that took place at Sri Maha Mariamman Temple of USJ25, near Subang Jaya, during the last two nights.

Selangor police chief Mazlan Mansor said they arrested nine people yesterday during their latest attack on suspects who allegedly caused problems at the temple.

He added that the 30 people arrested included 24 Malays, one Chinese, two Muslim Indians and three Indians.

The 21 people previously arrested were remanded in custody while the nine others arrested yesterday would be returned tomorrow, he added.

One of the 30 arrested is a lawyer working for One City Development, the company that owns the land on which the temple is located and wants to rehouse it.

Mazlan said that another man arrested with the lawyer was a friend of the lawyer. The pretrial detention of the lawyer and his friend would be extended by three days, he added.

Earlier in the day, One City Development said in a statement that he had not authorized anyone to "engage thugs" to "provoke" troubles at the temple.

During the arrest yesterday of several young people who were strolling near the temple around 1am, Mazlan said that they had been released today, while they were just "harmless" youngsters who had gone for a drink at the restaurant.

He added that the investigation was continuing and that he hoped to make more arrests.

He said that there was no timetable for when the authorities would stop monitoring the temple but that it would be "until everything is safe".

"The road is still closed, so it will be easier for the police to control the situation. We hope people understand this.

About 500 police officers were posted in the area.

Mazlan warned individuals who spread false information on social media to stop doing so.

"The police will investigate this and we will act against them. Do not speculate and spread false news that can harm the community. "
