The general manager of fire and rescue services said today that no member of his staff had been mowed by a fire engine in reverse while he was trying to escape a crowd during the riot of the Seafield Temple on Tuesday morning.
According to Mohammad Hamdan Wahid, firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kasim, an injured firefighter, was reportedly walking behind a fire engine in the viral clip.
Hazim was sitting alongside the general manager at the press conference held today at the National Institute of Cardiology (NYI).
Hamdan said eight more firefighters and rescue workers at the chaos spots outside Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman's temple in Subang Jaya on Tuesday in the early hours of Tuesday could attest to the fact that Hazim was not knocked out .
"We let the police investigate. The eight firefighters present at the scene know what has really happened. There are laws to deal with those who spread false news.
"It's not our style (the department) to dismantle our colleagues," he said.
Hamdan was answering a claim by the temple guards earlier in the day, citing an undisclosed video clip that they claimed was knocked down by a fire truck in reverse, landing it on a nearby car.
This contrasts with the government's version of the 24-year-old man being pulled out of his van and assaulted by rioters at the scene while answering an emergency call.
The chairman of the temple committee, S Ramaji, had said that a person wearing a fire-resistant suit and seen walking behind the recoil vehicle in the clip was Adib.
Hamdan said firefighters and rescue teams responding to an emergency call had been greeted by a crowd.
"The driver of the fire engine said that when they went to the scene, they were met with machetes and steel pipes knocking on the door of the vehicle.
"You can judge for yourself if it's a good hospitality. Hazim was sitting next to the driver, "said Hamdan.
Good samaritans
Comment another Video clip who allegedly depicted a group extracting Adib injured from the scene and loading him into a pickup truck bound for the hospital, Hamdan said:
"I think they were good Samaritans in the group, but I leave it to the police to see who has rioted and who has saved (lives).
"I do not want to comment a lot on that. I just want to say that the remark (that Adib was not assaulted) is not true and unfounded. The story has been spun and it's like trying to justify the unjustifiable (menegakkan benang yang basah). "
Recalling the events of that night, Hazim said he was about to attend the fire truck reel on his arrival at the scene, after being attacked by the crowd.
"We were attacked and fearing for my life, I came across the EMRS vehicle (emergency medical rescue team) (behind the fire truck, in which Adib was sitting).
"I've been confused with Adib," he said, referring to the video clip that showed a silhouette behind the fire truck.
To a question of knowing he saw Adib (aboveHazim said that he had not done so since he had fled into the EMRS vehicle in the moments that followed.
Adib is currently under supervision at the National Institute of Cardiology after being transferred to a private hospital in Subang Jaya. It is said that his condition improves.
The riots resulted from an attack launched in the early hours of Monday morning by a group of 50 masked individuals who were trying to secure the temple, which is at the center of a legal dispute over a relocation project.
The authorities said that the promoter's lawyers who were trying to take control of the land hired a group to do so, which triggered the first riot.
Police arrested 21 people in connection with Monday morning's attack, including two lawyers.
Adib was seriously injured the second night of the riots.
