KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Housing and Local Government Zuraida Kamaruddin (peak) criticized the attack on firefighters at Sri Maha Mariamman Devasthanam Temple early Tuesday morning (November 27).
She expressed her shock at the attack, which resulted in a firefighter needing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of a Subang Jaya hospital.
Describing the attack as unreasonable, Zuraida said that the attack on an officer in uniform should never have taken place.
"They were uniformed officials and we need to maintain a level of respect," she said.
Zuraida stressed that, in the spirit of the new Malaysia, the people and civil society must adhere to the rule of law and the federal Constitution.
"They can not do as they see fit … Law enforcement must also be more diplomatic," she added.
Tuesday morning, firefighters were near the temple to extinguish a burning car, burned by angry protesters.
However, the victim was dragged out of her EMRS van (emergency response system) shortly after arriving at the scene and was beaten by an angry mob.
He sustained internal injuries and broken bones.
However, contrary to various information, Zuraida claimed that the firefighters had not been hurt too much.
"The treatment is not very critical, but it needs to be sewn," she added.
The temple pandemonium began Monday morning (November 26) following a fight between two groups for the relocation of the temple from USJ25 to USJ23.
Zuraida said the case was a long-standing dispute that should have been resolved earlier by concerned stakeholders.
"I hope that the police will conduct a detailed investigation and act accordingly," she said.
Zuraida said that the fire and rescue service would not stop performing its duties despite the attack.
