Sony seems to be working on a new game cartridge technology, despite the industry's growing shift to digital and disc formats.
Sony has filed a patent in South Korea for a new technology called simply "electronic game cartridge". The patent application, previously reported by Techstatic and Engadget, provides no details of what Sony has planned for the technology. But it seems that something would be inserted into a portable device or game console and would allow you to play games on the Sony device of your choice.
Although we do not know if the game cartridge will eventually end up in a future gaming device, there have been clues in recent months that suggest that Sony is working on something.
In May, for example, the company said it saw value in a device that could both offer portable games and home games. Meanwhile, reports continue to suggest that Sony is working on a big update of PlayStation 5.

Nintendo has lost sight of the fact that the Nintendo Switch, which lets you play quality console games both at home on your TV and on the go is extremely popular. It is possible that Sony thinks to be able to restart its PlayStation Vita and combine it with a new PlayStation console and follow the turn of Nintendo. Along the way, the cartridge could be the way to transport games from one form to another.
But alas, there is no way to know for sure what Sony has really planned. Like other big companies, Sony files patents all the time. And while some will materialize, others will fall away, never to be seen again. We do not know which of these two batteries the game cartridge could fall.
