KUCHING: A member of Gabungan Party Sarawak (GPS) asked if the federal government's policy of limiting media coverage of the Sarawak government's events had earned it a fight from a federal minister.
According to the Malaysiakini online news portal, Batuk Sadong MP Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri asked this question when Minister of Communications and Multimedia Gobind Singh Deo answered a question about media ownership by politically linked entities of Dewan Rakyat.
In response to Nancy's request, Gobind reportedly stated that he had already made a number of statements about the independence of the media and that he had been covered in the media by government-owned media outlets reporting Sarawak government events.
However, Gobind said the Sarawak government had a clear policy of preventing community leaders appointed by the government from attending events organized by Pakatan Harapan legislators.
"You come (here) and ask for freedom, but when it concerns us, we are not allowed (to have freedom in Sarawak). This must stop.
"I know you're a professional. Please, talk to your Chief Minister of Sarawak. Tell him to do what's right, "said an angry Gobind.
There was a hubbub on a circular purporting to come from the state government prohibiting community leaders from attending programs and events organized by the federal government, now controlled by Pakatan Harapan (PH) .
The opposition leaders in Sarawak were armed with the circular. The president of PH Sarawak, Chong Chieng Jen, reportedly said that the state government's directive was not constitutional.
