It appears that fuel retailers are opting for cashless payment as Petronas also launches its hat in the ring with its Setel Electronic Wallet App, presented at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS).
Available on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store, the service can currently be used in more than 40 resorts in the Klang Valley. This number is expected to increase to 600 by June 2019. The company expects that a national expansion will be completed by the end of next year.
Unlike Petron's cashless service, which works with WeChat Pay, Setel is its own system, designed to be directly integrated with fuel pumps, which would be the first in Southeast Asia. The application allows customers to buy gasoline in just a few taps, directly from the comfort of their car. Starting in January next year, it will also allow users to buy items in Mesra stores. It also incorporates the loyalty program Kad Mesra.
"Pumping fuel should not be a chore. Currently, the payment process involves going to the cashier, lining up, keeping RM 200 on your cards and having to use a separate card to earn loyalty points, "said Setel boss Iskandar Ezzahuddin. "Setel eliminates these pain points and integrates the benefits of payment and loyalty in a seamless and frictionless experience. At Setel, we settle for you!
Managing Director and General Manager of Petronas Dagangan, Datuk Sri Syed Zainal Syed Mohd Tahir, said: "Petronas is focused on creating a new customer experience in our retail sector by leveraging on the power of digital. Setel offers a seamless end-to-end experience focused on the ease and ease of purchasing fuel at our customers' fingertips. We are proud to be the first to offer this service in Malaysia. "
