KUALA LUMPUR: Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, the firefighter badly wounded in the crash of the Sri Maha Mariamman temple, shows signs of awakening and responds to verbal orders from the National Institute of Cardiology (IJN), where he is being treated .

In the latest update of his condition, IJN said the 24-year-old was still sedated to allow his organs to recover.

"Adib continues to show signs of improvement.

"He is less dependent on drugs for his heart, the oxygen settings for the ECMO machine have been reduced but he still needs full support for his kidney.

"He is currently in a comatose state of medical origin," he said in a statement.

Summing up his condition, IJN said the firefighter remained critical but stable with signs of improvement.

NIJ physiotherapists would begin passive physiotherapy support today as part of Adib's cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.

Police Inspector General Mohamad Fuzi Harun confirmed today that Adib had been assaulted and not hit by a fire truck, as some claim.
