It's serious!
Channel News Asia reported that seven cases of liver damage due to the consumption of mahogany seeds, commonly referred to as "Fruits of the sky" or "Buah tunjuk langit".
According to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), mahogany seeds are traditionally used in Southeast Asia to control high blood pressure and blood sugar levels. That said, no clinical studies have claimed the efficacy or safety of these seeds.
HSA then added that the cases (seven in total) had been recorded in the last three years and were associated with consumption of mahogany seeds in raw form and in capsule form.
Of the seven patients registered, five of them were hospitalized. Fortunately, they are now recovered or recovering because they stopped consuming the seeds. For your information, these patients are mostly 40 to 70 years old.
The HSA also noted that most patients were already suffering from other hidden medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia (high blood cholesterol) and fatty liver. It was also mentioned that these patients were simultaneously using other drugs, apart from mahogany seeds.
Channel News Asia added that liver damage occurred after 30 to 45 days of deadly seed consumption. However, a patient's liver was injured only after six months.
The report further revealed that five of the patients ate mahogany seeds purchased in Singapore and Malaysia. They consumed raw seeds, ranging from 10 seeds per month to 18 seeds per day.
On the other hand, two other patients took irregularly mahogany seed capsules or only two capsules twice a day. One of the products, Natural Miracle Healer, was obtained from a Singaporean blog shop while another was an unknown brand from Malaysia.
HSA was quoted as follows:
"Although there is no scientific data on the risk of liver injury from mahogany seed, HSA recommends that consumers be cautious when considering using these products. HSA will continue to monitor the situation closely and inform the public of important results. "
Therefore, it is recommended to all people who have consumed the seeds to consult a doctor if they exhibit the symptoms mentioned below:
- Nausea
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy
- Dark urine
- Signs of jaundice, such as yellowing skin or whites
Yeah, it's very scary!
That said, make sure you always consult a legitimate doctor before taking any traditional or modern medicine, as we could put our health at risk by taking products that are not certified medically. Stay safe, guys!
