Steam ends support for older versions of macOS on January 1 – Tech News

Players using Apple computers must add "upgrade macOS" to their New Year's resolutions, as the game store store is phasing out support for older macOS.

Steam has announced that it will cease to support MacOS 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks and 10.10 Yosemite versions effective January 1, 2019.

"This means that after that date, the Steam client will no longer work on these versions of macOS.To continue using Steam and all games or products purchased via Steam, users will need to update their version of macOS," it says.

This removal is due to the fact that the Steam client relied on an integrated version of Google Chrome that no longer worked on older versions of macOS, as well as features and security updates that are only available in macOS 10.11 El Capitan and versions later.

Steam says that although its client can still run games on older macOS for the remainder of 2018, some other functions will be affected.

For example, the new online chat service on Steam will not be available.

The latest macOS, 10.14 Mojave, are compatible with the following Apple products: MacBook (early 2015 or newer), MacBook Air (mid-2012 or newer), MacBook Pro (mid-2012 or newer), Mac mini (late 2012 or newer), iMac. (Late 2012 or newer), iMac Pro (2017), and Mac Pro (late 2013, mid-2010, and mid-2012 models with supported Metal technology graphics cards).

Apple says that the upgrade is free and available to any computer with macOS 10.8 Mountain Lion or later. It recommends that users back up their computers before upgrading.
