KLANG: Azwanddin Hamzah will spend the next four days in jail to allow the police to conduct an investigation in his speech at a rally on Christmas Day.
The court of first instance today opened a request for provisional detention, following his arrest yesterday for his provocative speech, in which he threatened to attack a police station.
Azwanddin, who heads the right – wing group Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM), appeared in court today handcuffed.
It is under investigation under Article 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, based on eight police reports, including one prepared by a police officer from Klang District. .
In his Tuesday speech, he attacked Prime Minister P Waytha Moorthy's minister, using a derogatory reference for ethical Indians.
Azwanddin and several Malaysian leaders blamed Waytha for the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Kassim, who was allegedly attacked by a mob during violent protests outside Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Subang Jaya last month.
His lawyer, Mohd Imran Tamrin, said that Azwanddin's speech could be open to interpretations.
Imran also urged the "other parties" to be the subject of an investigation.
"Do not focus only on Azwandddin, but on the other parties that are still free," he said, apparently evoking calls from far-right groups calling for Waytha's arrest.
