From midnight tonight, AirAsia – as a sign of protest – will perceive the increase in passenger service charges (PSC) levied by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).
Passengers will be required to pay an additional RM 23 in PSC, and the differential amount will be clearly indicated in the detailed rate as "PSC (under protest)".
This decision follows a recent court decision in which the Kuala Lumpur High Court rejected AirAsia and AirAsia X's delisting requests regarding the payment of the pending CPS to Malaysia Airports (Sepang) Sdn Bhd (MASSB), a subsidiary of MAHB.
Riad Asmat, chief executive of AirAsia Malaysia, said the airline would recover the entire PSC RM73, but would do so "under strong protest".
"By detailing the additional PSC, our 5.5 million guests will leave KLIA2 every year for destinations other than ASEAN to find out how much they pay for substandard facilities. I think many will agree with us that they do not get what they pay for, especially when compared to KLIA's top quality facilities, "he said.
The PSC, or airport tax, is charged by the MAHB to all departing passengers for the use of airport facilities and is collected by airlines such as AirAsia for the account of the airport operator.
MAHB had imposed a new RM73 CSP on passengers using KLIA2 to destinations beyond Asean – at the same fare as KLIA Full Service Terminal – as of July 2018.
This rate is higher than the previous rate of RM 50 and AirAsia refused to collect the additional RM 23 from its guests to ensure that air travel remains affordable for all.
AirAsia X Malaysia CEO Benyamin Ismail said the company would continue to oppose until all "legal options are exhausted".
"Believe me, we really do not want to do that and we sympathize with our guests. The PSC for passengers traveling beyond Asean has more than doubled in less than two years, from RM32 to RM73. We hope our guests will understand, "he said.
