Muhammad Adib Muhammad Kassim, the staff of the fire and rescue service who was severely injured during the riots outside the Sri Maha Mariamman temple early yesterday morning, was transferred to the National Institute of Cardiology (IJN) for further treatment.

Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin, who oversees the Fire and Rescue Department, made the statement at a press conference at the Subang Jaya Medical Center (SJMC) at 11:20 pm tonight.

"Doctors are now preparing to transfer Adib to IJN.

"IJN has a machine, and it is the only machine in all of Malaysia that can provide additional treatment by allowing more oxygen in its lungs.

"By allowing oxygen in his lungs, we hope he can recover more quickly," she said after visiting Adib and her family at the medical center.

An IJN ambulance was seen leaving the private hospital at 23:30.

The director general of the department, Mohammad Hamdan Wahid, had already stated that Adib's lungs were flat by several of his broken ribs.

"He has bruises all over his stomach and chest. We suspect this is the cause of his fractured ribs, which punctured his lungs and affected the intestines.

"He's still in intensive care," Hamdan said.

Adib, 24, was in an emergency van when a crowd started throwing stones at the vehicle, smashing windows, mirrors and doors.

The van had arrived at the scene in response to calls regarding the fire during the riot.

It was during the scrum that he was dragged out of the vehicle and assaulted.

In the midst of chaos, Adib's partner left without realizing that Adib was not in the vehicle with him.

A member of the public then brought him to the hospital.

Malaysiakini understands that parents, brothers and sisters and Adib's fiancé will go to IJN to join him.

Adib today received a host of guests, including Minister of Water, Lands and Natural Resources, Xavier Jayakumar, Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Gobind Singh Deo, the Minister of National Unity and Social Welfare, P Waythamoorthy and Deputy Minister of the Interior, Azis Jamman.

Members of MIC, PAS and the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Committee also visited SJMC.
