PETALING JAYA: PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (peak) called on the public to remain calm and not to fall prey to negative racial sentiments.
He noted that, as a country with a multitude of backgrounds, Malaysians are fortunate not to have suffered from race-related violence for decades.
"Unlike many countries in the world, we do not have to fear for our life if we have the wrong skin color when we walk on a street or in a bad neighborhood.
"However, this hard-fought peace is not something we should take for granted," he said in a statement released Thursday (November 29th).
The MP for Port Dickson also said that there should be no compromise with regard to the saboteurs of peaceful coexistence between various ethnic and religious groups in Malaysia.
"Criminals who try to hide their insidious feelings under the guise of negative racial sentiments should be equally harsh," he added.
Anwar said this in light of the recent crash at Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, where two groups clashed over the temple's move.
"In times of uncertainty, it's easy to retreat into our comfort zones and take in those who are perceived to be different from us." However, it's precisely during these moments that we should reach out and unite on the issues that bind us, "he said.
He called on people to critically assess things and not allow racists and keyboard warriors to sabotage the changes that people are fighting for.
Anwar pointed out that as the president of a multiracial party, PKR had taken up the challenges of the last 20 years fighting against injustice and inequalities, regardless of race or religion.
"We are also stronger because of our diversity and not in spite of it," he added.
He also commended the efforts of the security forces, who risk their lives and work hard behind the scenes to ensure the permanent peace and security of Malaysians.
"The rule of law must be upheld and no subversive legal acts should be allowed," he added.
