Electoral Commission member K Bala Singam decided to shorten his term as of 1 January.
In a statement issued today, European Commission President Azhar Azizan Harun said that this was done in accordance with Article 114 of the Federal Constitution concerning its members.
In this regard, Azhar said that the letter soliciting Yang di-Pertuan Agong's agreement on the reduction of Bala Singam's mandate as a member of the EC had been sent to Istana Negara today.
On 18 October, the EC decided to shorten the duties of its vice-president, Othman Mahmood, and four of the five members of the commission, effective 1 January.
The four members of the EC were MM. Yusop Mansur, Abdul Aziz Khalidin, Sulaiman Narawi and Leo Chong Cheong. Bala Singam was then the only remaining member.
