GEORGE TOWN: Police announced it was abandoning the case of a group of Finnish nationals who had distributed Bibles and pens on Chenang Beach last week on the orders of the prosecution.
Langkawi Police Chief Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said that the Attorney General's Office (AGC) was not recommending any continuation of the case.
However, the AGC also recommended that the four arrested Finnish nationals be barred entry into Malaysia in the future.
Iqbal said the individuals arrested last week would be deported as soon as possible.
"The group was handed over to the Department of Immigration to be deported," he said when making contact.
Iqbal also said that the MCO would send a letter to the Finnish embassy in Kuala Lumpur to express his "dissatisfaction" with the actions of his nationals.
On November 20, the police responded to a complaint by a person claiming that the group of four Finns had distributed Bibles to the public, expressing their concerns about Muslims' sensitivity to Langkawi.
The police then arrested four people between the ages of 27 and 60, including two women.
During the arrest, the police seized 47 pens and 336 booklets containing excerpts from the Bible, which were distributed to the public.
They also obtained a pre-trial detention order under section 298A of the Penal Code, which led to their disagreement or unwillingness.
The four people were also the subject of an investigation under Rule 39B of the Immigration Regulations of 1963 for violation of the terms of their visit pass.
