Kevin De Bruyne is fighting to be ready for the tight match at Chelsea one week Saturday.
The Manchester City midfielder, who won a brilliant – and very important – winner at Stamford Bridge last season, was targeting the home game this weekend with Bournemouth.
The Blues star has been missing for a month after injuring knee ligaments in the Carabao Cup win over Fulham, an injury that should keep him out for five to six weeks.
The Belgian international had hoped to return to training this week, hoping that he could reach his personal goal of coming back against the Cherries.
However, City sources said De Bruyne was virtually ruled out for Saturday and was not likely to visit Watford next Tuesday.
After suffering three knee ligament injuries in three years, City is reluctant to push him back too soon, leaving a doubt about his ability to face Chelsea.
Several City players said last season's 1-0 win over defending champions land was a turning point for the Blues.
It was a complete victory, with De Bruyne both as a key player and winner of the match, and convinced the team that Guardiola's master plan was even working against the best opposition.
But Guardiola is waiting for better news from his medical staff about Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus and Ilkay Gundogan, who missed their trip to Lyon.
They should all be in shape for the Bournemouth match.
