Earlier this year, Honda announced that the HR-V would receive an update for the 2019 model year in Europe, which includes a new engine option in the form of the Civic's 1.5 liter VTEC Turbo engine. This is now featured in the HR-V Sport, a new variant that differs a bit from the classic HR-V beyond what's under the hood.
We will focus on the evidence first. The HR-V Sport is equipped with a 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission or a CVT transmission. With manual control, the peak power of 182 hp reaches 5,500 rpm and 6,000 rpm with the CVT.
The manual option also gets a higher torque of 240 Nm, from 1,900 to 5,000 rpm, while the CVT only gets 220 Nm, from 1,700 to 5,500 rpm. Here in Malaysia, the Honda HR-V is powered by a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, delivering 142 horsepower and 172 Nm of torque.
Honda says the new (and sportier) model is for those who want a more dynamic driving experience. The HR-V Sport benefits from the "Performance Damper" technology. Essentially, the car comes with adaptive roll bars at the front and rear to counteract relative lateral and torsional movement across the chassis to keep it flatter in bends and 39, improve stability.
The power ratio rack-and-pinion steering system is also unique in the new model and is expected to provide a consistent response to central, center and eccentric steering angles.
Mechanical changes aside, the HR-V Sport features a gloss black chrome panel for its 'Solid Wing Face', and a black honeycomb finish for the front grille trim and fog lamp surround . Other styling revisions include a thin front splitter, side skirts, wheel arch moldings and a more aggressive rear bumper, all with a black finish.
The model also comes with black mirror caps, two exhaust pipes, 18-inch alloy wheels with unique design, LED headlights, black chrome tailgate trim and smoked tail lights. As for the interior, the seats follow a black and dark red color scheme, combined with a black roof lining. Production of the HR-V Sport is expected to begin in December 2018, with the first customer deliveries in the spring of 2019.
