Amr Adeeb, host of a pro-government talk show condemned the declared exports and called on the government to put an end to "mercy" exports of animals.
"I would just like to ask an economic question: how much revenue would these dogs and cats exported to Asian countries bring back to Egypt? Egypt is a merciful country, a religious country. We do not need that, "said Adeeb.
According to the General Authority of Veterinary Services (GAVS), export licenses for 2,400 cats and 1,700 dogs of different breeds have been granted.
GAVS stated that the process was conducted in accordance with international regulations governing the export of animals, in particular by ensuring that they were disease-free.

About one million dogs are eaten each year in South Korea. Although their meat is considered a delicacy, attitudes towards dog consumption are changing rapidly, especially among young people.
Yet according to the Humane Society International, "South Korea is the only country in Asia where dogs are raised routinely and intensively for human consumption."
