Mick Schumacher, son of Michael, seven-time world champion, will move to the Formula 2 series for next season.

The German will remain in the PREMA team, with whom he has already raced in Formula 3 and Formula Four.

PREMA team manager Rene Roison had the pleasure of welcoming Schumacher to the team and said he felt the young player had the ability.

"We are proud to welcome Mick into our Formula Two operation for 2019," Roison said at the announcement.

"This championship is not easy because of its learning curve for beginners, especially with the introduction of the new car, but we believe that Mick has the maturity and skills to do it."

Schumacher will drive the PREMA car for the first time in the post-season F2 trials at Yas Marina. He called the move "a logical step".

"For me, it was very clear to get into Formula Two with Prema," Schumacher explained.

"I can not thank the Prema family too much for what we have accomplished as a team, especially this year, for the continuation of our common development."

Two other drivers have also been announced in the F2 Championship for next season.

Nikita Mazepin will move from GP3 to F2 with ART, the team that led George Russell to the title in 2018.

Honda junior driver Nobuharu Matsushita will also return to the F2 grid and the Japanese driver will race for Carlin, who won the team championship this year.
