LONDON, Nov. 27 – Michael Schumacher's 19-year-old son, Mick, is about to follow his father in Formula 1 after the Prema team has announced he will race for them in Formula 2 next season.
The series feeds Formula One and the first three of this year – George Russell, Lando Norris and Alexander Albon – have all won places with Grand Prix teams for 2019.
Mick Schumacher won the European Championship Formula 3 this year with eight wins, seven pole positions and 14 podiums. This title means that he is already qualified to race in Formula One.
"He is an extremely talented and dedicated rider, and working with him is a pleasure and we look forward to starting this adventure together," said Rene Rosin, director of the Mercedes-Benz team, in a statement on Tuesday.
"This series is not easy because of its learning curve for beginners, especially with the introduction of the new car, but we believe that Mick has the maturity and skills to to realize it. "
The young German said the move was "a logical step" on the scale and that it would help him improve his skills and gain more experience.
"I can not thank too much the Prema family for what we have accomplished as a team, especially this year, for the continuation of our common development," he added.
The young Schumacher will test with Prema in Abu Dhabi later this week.
In October, Lewis Hamilton, five-time world champion, said he was expecting Schumacher to go to the end.
"There will be a 100% Schumacher in Formula 1, partly because of his name, but also because he's doing a great job," the Mercedes driver said at the time.
Michael Schumacher has won a record seven Formula 1 championships, including five consecutive with Ferrari, and also holds the record for the number of victories in the race with 91.
Aged 49, whose privacy is closely watched, he has not been seen in public since he was seriously injured in the head as a result of a ski accident in France in December 2013. – REuters
