Kelantan Mufti Mohamad Mohamad Shukri said the plan to hold the December 8 rally against the ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd) treaty should be abandoned, given the current situation of "high voltage" in the country.
In addition, the rally is no longer necessary as the government has announced that it will not ratify the UN agreement, the New Strait Times quoted him as saying.
"In Islam, when we want to achieve something, we have to weigh the good and the bad.
"If the evil outweighs the good, why continue?", He said about the rally organized by the NGO Gerakan Pembela Ummah, supported by Umno and NOT.
"People could take advantage of it to provoke a riot. In my opinion, it is better that this gathering not take place, "he added.
Mohamad previously backed the government's decision to reject the ratification of the Icerd, which "further aggravates the damage done to the country's current situation".
Despite the government's announcement, the rally organizers said the rally would be held not to protest, but to express gratitude for the government's decision.
Gerakan Pembela Ummah, in a statement, stressed that the rally would proceed as planned.
He reiterated that this would in no way be linked to riots what happened during the proposed move from Sri Maha Mariamman Temple to USJ25, Subang Jaya earlier this week.
Its chairman Aminuddin Yahya said that there was no reason to fear that the rally will cause racial tension.
"We strongly reject the claims that the gathering will address the temple issue.
"Do not make the temple problem deter the gathering," he said, while warning potential troublemakers to stay away from the rally.
He said his NGO had met with Dang Wangi's police on the matter and said he would not hesitate to let the rally take place.
