The electrocardiogram function (EKG) long promised by the Apple Watch Series 4 could finally benefit from assistance in the next update of watchOS 5.1.2, according to a training document from the Apple Store obtained by MacRumeurs.

This feature will allow the portable device to take ECG measurements using built-in electrodes at the back of the watch and the digital crown, which will enhance the ability of the Apple Watch to measure and monitor users' hearts. . Apple has received FDA type II approval for the Apple Watch in the United States, which, as Angela Chen explains, is not quite the same thing than the full approval of the FDA type III.

According to the training document, EKG features will only be available in areas where Apple Watch has been authorized to be used, which seems to only concern the United States at the initial launch. That said, it is hard to imagine that Apple is not yet seeking medical approval for other countries.

The updated version of watchOS 5.1.2 is in beta testing for developers, but it is not clear when the final version will be released.
