With the rise in vinyl sales and even the sale of physical records over digital albums, being a vinyl lover is no longer a niche market. All of this means that if you really If you want to keep your trendy creed, you will have to find another way to do it – like, for example, 3D printing your own modular hub.
Fortunately, a new Kickstarter campaign promises you this exact opportunity. Lenco-MD is a collaboration between the Swiss manufacturer Lenco and the Dutch publisher of 3D printing RepRapUniverse. It would be the world's first hard disk drive printed in 3D. It's an attempt to bring together the world of vinyl lovers, DIYers and technology manufacturers to create what its designers clearly hope to be the beginning of something beautiful. The first functional prototype of the Lenco-MD was presented at the consumer electronics event organized by IFA Berlin this year, where it was ranked among the top three inventions.
The innovative modular part of the concept refers to the fact that each Lenco-MD has two empty module slots. These can be used to upgrade decks by adding features such as speakers and Bluetooth wireless streaming as plug-and-play modules. These are under development, although the idea is that users will also be able to design and create their own, which they can then share with the rest of the community. This is a pretty original idea and could certainly enrich the functionality of the device if Lenco-MD takes off.
As always, we offer our usual warnings about the potential risks inherent in crowdfunding campaigns. These may include products that do not show up as promised, are delayed, or are not shipped at all. If you still want to try Lenco-MD, go to the Kickstarter page to commit your money.
The turntable is available in several bright colors. More importantly, you can choose to pay 99 euros (about $ 113) for 3D printing files, as well as the necessary components not printed in 3D, or 199 euros ($ 226) for a fully printed and ready-to-print version used. The shipment is scheduled for March 2019, provided it meets its funding targets.
