A new update from WhatsApp seems ready to prevent people from capturing their private conversations.
The new feature – which is part of a suite of security changes, in accordance with the privacy enforcement's commitment – seems strangely integrated.
According to WABetaInfo, the blog that first reported changes, it does not seem to prevent people who take captures of your discussions from writing in your chat. The change is part of an authentication feature that has long been prevalent but still needs to appear in WhatsApp. This feature allows users to set fingerprint access to conversations, adding an extra layer of security that prevents them from accessing your phone, reading, or sending private messages.
However, the activation of this security feature also activates the conversation screen capture blocking option, which means that it is not possible to take any pictures of your own discussions.
Why does the feature work this way? WABetaInfo has expressed confusion about how it works.
"We do not know why WhatsApp has decided to prevent screen captures when fingerprints are enabled, and personally, I do not know if users appreciate this idea," writes the blog in an article announcing Discovery.
Applications may inform people that objects have been recovered, such as with the Snapchat Story feature. Applications can also completely ban screen captures – like Netflix, which prevents people from taking screenshots of its videos – and it appears that this option is enabled in WhatsApp.
The details on the new screen capture lockout come from a very old version of the application available for some users on Android. This serves as a testing ground for new features, some of which are modified or completely removed before being made public.
