It seems that Hyundai is considering a new halo sports car under its N performance division, a report revealed. The car should be a brand new model and might not be an upgraded version of an existing Hyundai product.
The news comes from an interview Auto Express recently had with Hyundai's vice president of performance and motorsport, Thomas Schemera. He said that there was a halo pattern on the way, after the launch of the I30 N and the next Veloster N.
It is understood that the first phase of the brand plans N has been completed, with the i30 and the Veloster. These two cars are based on their respective Hyundai models, only they are completely reworked by the new N division. They have been the result of many engineering works led by former BMW chef Albert Biermann. Now that the first phase is finalized, work on the next project has apparently begun. Speaking with the publication, Schemera said:
"I can tell you that Albert Biermann and I are interested in hot things and that we have ideas for a halo model – rest assured that we find Something."
The details surrounding the next vehicle are yet to be discovered and Hyundai is not expected to launch it for several years, however, speculation suggests that it could be a mid-sized sport sedan based on the Kia Stinger and Genesis G70. Both use a new 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 to produce 272 kW. These cars have the potential to be adjusted and modified to become more hardcore models, and therefore answers to the BMW M3 and others.
There's also the possibility of Hyundai N making a two-door custom-made sport coupe, potentially borrowing from the Stinger / G50 V6 engine. It is believed that engineers and bigwigs are still in talks to finalize this first phase of the project.
You may remember the concept of the RN30 Hyundai Veloster (pictured) from a few years ago. It featured a unique mid-engine configuration with rear-wheel drive. Spy videos capturing prototypes of the concept suggested that Hyundai could plan to launch a production version of this. Well, we'll have to wait and see.
