Subaru WRX STI Type RA sets another incredible world record

Subaru of America, Provide, and Mark Higgins took the WRX STI Type RA Time Attack car and set a new world record. If you remember, Subaru has released the car four times since its construction by Prodrive. The first record was set at the TT Mountain Course of the Isle of Man in 2016 when they set a record lap for a car with an average speed of 128.73 mph.

In 2017, they set the Nurburgring record with New Zealand driver Richie Stanaway setting a record for the four-door saddle of 6: 57.5. Last year, the WRX STI Type RA went up the hill at Goodwood Hill Climb with Higgins in the driver's seat, where she finished third.

Subaru took the high-performance special TSI on Romania's national highway 7C, known as Transfagaraşan, to attempt the registration of another word. This unique winding road is dotted with tight hairpin bends, long S-curves and steep descents through south-central Romania and has captivated the imagination of performance enthusiasts around the world. A normal car can only drive the high mountain road at an average speed of 25 mph. According to an MSN Autos article, Subaru of America thought it was time "that someone fixed a record time."

With veteran Subaru Mark Higgins driving the Subaru WRX STI Type RA and co-driver Darren Garrod in the passenger seat, they called the record attempt, Time Attack Romania. Subaru and Prodrive have made some changes to the STI by trying to add work lights, a barometric sensor and a 100-liter fuel tank.

The weather was not cooperating as the team was leaving on the Romanian 52.4 mile route with 624 tight curves and elevation changes ranging from 1,607 to 6,699 feet to navigate. They also had to deal with the rain and fog and try to determine which tires were the best. In one fell swoop, the 2.0-liter Boxer engine developing 600 horsepower and 447 lb-ft of WRX STI destroyed rain-specific tires as the road went from wet to dry.

With weather playing a role, fog and rain finally disappeared from the high mountain road and Subaru, Prodrive and Higgins were ready for one last attempt. The Subaru WRX STI Type RA weather attack machine behaved as it was supposed to do and set a record in 40 minutes, 58.8 seconds. The average speed was an incredible 76.69 mph. The Subaru helicopter took away captured parts of the 52.4 mile race, so expect a video to be broadcast soon. Stay tuned.
