Two jumpers from the base jumped at the same time – when a man in his twenties died in Stryn

The rider of the base, who died Saturday morning, jumped at the same time as another rider, confirms the police.

Police were informed that a cargo base had landed at Flst in Oppstrynvatnet on Flo in Stryn a little over midnight on Saturday night.

Saturday morning, at half-past five, it was reported that the rider on the base was dead.

The deceased is a man in his twenties and the notification of the next of kin is in progress, police said by the director of operations Terje Magnussen at the West Police District at VG Saturday morning.

In a press release issued Saturday morning, police said there were two jumpers who came out simultaneously from Måsahyrna Mountain in Flo, Stryn.

The rider of the deceased base is a foreign national, the police said.

When emergency services left last night, other people on the spot recovered the hopper in the water and have already started providing first aid, the police said.

Rescue helicopters and air ambulances were sent to the site. About an hour after the alert, the captain was aboard the helicopter and was transported to the hospital of Førde.

Police created an investigation after the incident.

The basic jumper must have used a so-called wing combination during the jump.

After first aid on the spot, the rescue helicopter transported the wounded to Førde hospital. But just after 4:30 am on Saturday morning, the police announced that the jumper was dead.

Stryn Mayor Sven Flo lives in Oppstryn and knows the location of the accident. The fatal accident last night is the second of the municipality in less than two months.

At the end of April, a 20-year-old Norwegian student died of an air sports accident in Loen, Stryn municipality, Sogn og Fjordane.

She jumped with a so-called speed glider and struck the Loen Skylift gondola cable.

Was promptly notified

Mayor Flo says he finds it sad and tragic that young lives were lost by jumping from the mountains in the municipality.

– There is a new tragic accident with fatal consequences. He is always sad when we receive messages that life is lost in this way, says Mayor Sven Flo in Stryn at VG.

He was quickly informed of the accident last night and was on the other side of Oppstrynvatnet, from where he could see rescue helicopters and emergency services. active in Flo.

Focuses on dialogue with the environment

The mayor is not among those who call for the ban of basic jumps after accidents.

– I do not believe in the prohibition or the imposition of strict restrictions. We are trying instead to facilitate – and to have a good dialogue with the environment of air sports and base jumping. My impression is that these are very serious practitioners who pay special attention to preparation, quality and competence, said the mayor.

He recalls that jumping at the base is an extreme sport associated with risk.

The mayor noted that several thousand jumps had been made, especially since Hoven at about 1,000 meters altitude and just down the Loenfjord, after the start of Loen Skylift.

Controversial activity

For several years, attempts have been made to prohibit base jumping in some of the municipalities with rugged mountains in western Norway.

Only the municipality of Aurland in Sogn recorded six fatal accidents related to basic jumps.

– If we manage to document that there is a great risk of accident here, as well as for the relief personnel, there should be a basis for such regulation with us, said Mayor Noralv Distad at Aurland after the last accident in his municipality.

As part of the Loen accident in April, CEO Richard Grov informed VG that nearly 7,000 jumps had been made in this area last year.
