Five people died when an old vehicle hit a mountain wall in Rjukan this fall. Failure of the brake belts and brake fluid contributed to the accident, according to the Havarikommission.
The accident occurred on September 2 and it was known that the brakes of the 59-year-old car were in a bad state. After thorough investigations, the HAZA Commission can now provide more details:
* There were worn brake shoes on two of the wheels and a big gap between the drum and the brake strap.
* The brake fluid is analyzed and is measured for its low boiling point and high water content.
It should be noted that brake failure does not only explain the accident, but also has to be associated with several other factors.
Get rid of the wall of the mountain
The car was a 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, without a seatbelt. He was descending from Gaustablikk to Rjukan as he was heading straight into a bend and into a mountain wall.
In the new information on the accident, it appears that the state of the above brake components did not meet the regulatory requirements.
"The wear would have been detected by a periodic inspection if it were necessary, while the brake fluid tests are not included," says the accident commission.
– Important that veteran carriers follow
Older cars are not subject to periodic inspection.
"It is important that this information reaches owners of similar vehicles so that they have the opportunity to monitor and ensure the safety of their own vehicles while awaiting the final report," he said. The final report is not ready yet.
Three women and two men died in the accident.
