Public and assured quality
What is anxiety related to health?
Health anxiety or hypochondria is a strong fear of contracting or having a life-threatening illness. One can also be afraid of a chronic and serious disorder. One can fear cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis or other similar serious neurological diseases.
People with health related anxiety will worry a lot about the pain or other changes in their body. They often follow very closely and wonder what may be the signs of an illness. Concerns mean that you often see a doctor and you may not be reassured even if the doctor does not detect any signs of illness.
Sometimes people are worried about the disease. This can happen if you know someone who has fallen ill, if you are very stressed or tired, or if you have heard of an illness that you have not heard so much about. Knowing how to be worried and wondering if you can be sick does not mean that you are anxious about your health.
A little "fear of health", that's good!
Take care of yourself. Talk to someone, go to the doctor if you notice something or think you may be sick. It's good to be up to date, take care of yourself and ask for help when needed.
The anxiety takes a lot of time and is not reassured by the answers of a doctor or other people. If worry begins to affect daily life, go beyond other activities and be very stressful and embarrassing, it can eventually lead to what you call health anxiety and hypochondria.
What can you do
If you notice a problem, it is good to have it checked by the general practitioner. You can also talk to the school health nurse or the youth health center. If a doctor finds nothing, it is good to try to accommodate it; undesirable ailments are rarely signs of serious illness.
If you have health and illness problems, you can share them with someone and clarify some ideas and concerns. It is often helpful to let your mind go with someone. Explore the mind, are they real? Are they useful? You can seek the help of a health nurse, in a youth health center or at a general practitioner.
What can I do if someone I know is worried about his illness?
Speak with them. Many very concerned people have little understanding and support. One misconception among many of them is that people with health anxiety want to attract attention, but this is often not the case. Health-related anxiety often causes less concentration and some negative reactions, and many may feel less safe and lonely. It is good to encourage those who are trying to ask for help.
