International electric car manufacturers are providing Chinese authorities with information from their customers' electric cars in China, and there are fears that monitoring will be misused, according to AP.
More than 220,000 vehicles will be tracked in Shanghai, against 1.1 million nationwide, the press agency writes. The information can reveal where car owners live, work and shop.
According to critics, data sharing could hurt the competitive position of automakers and the information could be used by the Chinese authorities to strengthen state surveillance.
Chinese officials said the system was aimed at protecting public security and facilitating the development of industry and infrastructure.
Tesla is one of more than 200 manufacturers, according to AP, which shares real-time information with monitoring centers in China. The company will not comment on this.
