Find a Viking Ship in Vestfold

A probably Viking-era ship tomb is located in Borreparken, Vestfold.

The Minister of Climate and Environment, Ola Elvestuen (V), had the honor to present the news at a press conference held in Borre, in the municipality of Horten, Monday morning .

– This is a great event, with a great new discovery of Viking, which will be noticed around the world. It's about the history of Vestfold, but also the history of Norway – and the history of the world, he said, and continues:

– It is unique in the history of Norway and at the international level, it is not possible to exaggerate its importance.

The trench was found in a plain among the great burial mounds of Borreparken. The discovery is made with georadar and the pictures show a clear boat shape.

– We hope to find a lot more. This shows how important it is to use new technologies. With georadar, we get new discoveries and new knowledge, says Elvestuen.

Seven shipyards have been registered in Europe and date back to the Viking Age. Three of them are located in Vestfold. With the discovery of the ship's grave at Jellestad in 2018 and probably now another ship from Borre, the number on the list goes to nine.

– It's not every day that we find a new Viking ship, so it's really exciting. But for us, this is not a surprise. Rune Hogsnes, councilor of Vestfold County, explains that many treasures are hiding behind the Viking era in our county.

He says that at present it is impossible to say how much has been preserved during the turf, but they will now do more research, including with georadar.

– We wish good cooperation with the Directorate of Cultural Heritage and the Museum of Cultural History. They are the ones who decide if a physical intervention needs to be done in the field, says Gansum.
