15% of the US auto giant's workforce must leave, and the goal is to save $ 6 billion, or just over NOK 51 billion.

8,100 of those who have to go to work at the office while the others are factory workers. Some will be offered end packs.

According to the plan, the Hamtramck Mills in Detroit and Lordstown in Warren, Ohio, will likely be closed next year, as will the Oshawa plant in Ontario, Canada.

GM says it will probably also be the gateway to the three Baltimore, Maryland and Warren engine plants in the United States, as well as two other engine plants outside of North America.

GM has long been known to produce big pickups and four-wheelers, but is now announcing that it will invest in electric cars.

Some of the plants threatened with closure may have a new life if GM succeeds in developing new popular models.
