Huawei has sought protection for the HongMeng brand, particularly in Norway. HongMeng has been known for some time as a code name for Google's upcoming alternative to Google based on the AOSP format.
According to Reuters, the Chinese company has sought trademark protection in a handful of other countries in addition to the EU.
ARK OS
Huawei also filed an application for trademark protection ARK OS in the European Union brands, which, according to some sources, should be the official name of the operating system. In the EU, the company will also seek trademark protection for a handful of other names containing the ARK designation, including ARKOS.
We do not find any similar registration request in Norway.
Previously, arkOS was the name of a Linux distribution, but it should have been closed in April 2017 and was not considered a registered trademark. This will not cause any problem for Huawei.
In the ARK operating system registration application, Huawei writes that it is a compilation software, electronic device operating systems, mobile application development and SaaS service (software as a service).
These restrictions do not appear in HongMeng applications. Everything is mentioned here, from humanoid robots with artificial intelligence, to scientific devices and instruments, diving masks and sticks. Much of this is probably related to the optional equipment for the operating systems.
Known for six months
Already last November, Huawei reportedly confirmed that the company was developing an alternative that the company could use in future mobile units, unless the dispute with the United States is resolved.
However, it was only in May of this year that it became clear that Huawei was not allowed to use Google's Android in upcoming products, nor the new versions of the operating system. It also excludes Google's central applications and structure. Subsequently, the company was also excluded from the technologies of a number of other US companies and technologies based on them.
While Google has chosen to follow the requirements of the US government, Huawei refuses access to new versions of Android, but Google has every interest in what Huawei continues to use Android and the services that it offers.

According to the Financial Times, an unnamed source indicates that Google should have warned the Trump administration that Huawei's ban would imply a risk to national security because, according to Google, HongMeng would likely have more vulnerabilities than Android and that it would increase the risk of hacking the device. , including Chinese teams.
Huawei devices will also not have access to Google Play and this service provided by apps and security features. Huawei has a similar service, AppGallery, and the company is now trying to get more developers to offer their applications there as well.
In many cases this will probably not involve much extra work. However, many other applications will need to be rewritten significantly as they are now dependent on Google components that are not part of the Android Open Source project, including Google Play services. These will not be available in HongMeng / ARK OS.
