– I think it's getting slimmer since I saw it for the first time. It is therefore important to know if he is eating and eating well, says Inspector Jørgen Ree Wiig from the Directorate of Fisheries.
He is one of those who closely follow the white whale "Hvaldimir" since its appearance under the harness near the Finnmark coast.
The whale, which has settled in Hammerfest, knows how to do a lot of tricks and is very expensive. It was speculated whether it was a Russian military whale or a therapeutic whale.
As he has undoubtedly lived in captivity for a long time, many fear that "Hvaldimir" will survive on his own. Many people have pointed out that a whale that is not used to feeding and does not have a herd would be hard pressed.
Therefore, the fisheries department, in collaboration with the Norwegian Orca Survey, is currently studying how the whale is and if it can actually find food.
You want to see what it does under the water
Before the weekend, they associated a camera and various sensors to "Hvaldimir", in order to be able to discover what he does when he dives.
– We have observed that he is diving a very long time, so we will see what he does when he is under water, says Ree Wiig.
The sensors were removed on Saturday and in the coming week, Norwegian Orca Survey will analyze the data on its position with "Hvaldimir".
What will eventually be done with the whale, who has so far done what he wants, is still not certain. Ree Wiig indicates that the Directorate of Fisheries will consult the Marine Research Institute, as an advisory body.
Previously, "Hvaldimir" was to be sent to Iceland or Spain, where there were reserves.
– Should be in touch with their own species
Ree Wiig points out that although the whale is thinner, it is both satisfying and full of energy.
– It looks like he's in a very good mood. He loves human contact and does not seem tired or stressed, he says.
White whales are social animals, but they should preferably have contact with their own species.
