Launches an electric SUV with a 180 kWh battery and seven seats

At the Los Angeles auto show this week, US launch company Rivian presents its two new electric models, R1S and R1T, respectively.

The first is a big SUV, while R1T is an American-American pickup. Cars share the platform and large parts of the specifications.

Among others, they are offered with three battery options: 105 kWh, 135 kWh and 180 kWh solid, with the specified range of approximately 370, 480 and 640 kilometers, respectively.

0-100 in just three seconds

Cars should be able to go from 96.5 km / h (0 to 60 miles at the time) in three seconds and from 0 to 160 kilometers at the hour in seven seconds. They have one engine for each of the four wheels, each providing a total of 147 kilowatts or 197 horsepower – and of course four-wheel drive.

Nevertheless, the power of the motor depends on the size of the battery, the smaller versions offering less power than the larger ones. The van can also tire up to five tons, while the SUV must pay close to 3.5 tons, and both can cross up to one meter of water in depth.

The SUV model will accommodate seven in the two smaller battery versions. The model with the largest battery will have five seats, and the same goes for the pickup.

Baggage tunnel

Rivian also points out how their platform "Skateboard" is built so that the entire battery, transmission, damping, brakes and heating system are located under the height of the wheel and that all space above is reserved for passengers and baggage.

The pickup also has a "Gear Tunnel", which is in practice a narrow luggage compartment that passes through the car under load. This will contain a total of 350 liters and Rivian mentions, among other things, snowboard and golf bags, as the case may be. Both R1S and R1T also have a chest under the front of the front, a "frunk", with a capacity of 330 liters.

Cars can reach 160 kilowatts, which will reach 320 kilometers in 30 minutes. The board is on his side at 11 kilowatts.

In true Tesla style, cars are connected to the cloud and support wireless software updates. Generally, it is controlled from a 15.6-inch screen located in the center of the dashboard.

The cars will be, among others, equipped with cameras, a lidar and a radar, which will result in a so-called level 3 autonomous driving. This means in practice that the car can drive even on motorways, but that the driver must comply with it and be able to intervene if necessary.

In a few years

Not surprisingly, they are not particularly cheap cars. Rivian warns of starting prices of $ 61,500 for R1T and $ 65,000 for R1S. That's after calculating the US federal tax deduction for electric cars.

It's $ 7,500, so we're talking about $ 69,000 (about $ 600,000) and $ 72,500 (about $ 625,000). Rain a lot more for versions with larger battery.

A Tesla Model X 100D alone costs $ 99,000 (just over $ 850,000), so Rivian's prices may not be so dissuasive. However, it will be a few years before anyone wants to see a Rivian car on the road.

The company plans to start production in 2020 for R1T and in 2021 for R1S, but already accepts pre-orders for a $ 1,000 deposit. The two largest battery variants will be available first, while the entry-level model will be delivered 6 to 12 months later.

It is not clear if cars will be available outside the United States.
