But what happens to the electric consumption of an electric car when you ride the roof box on it?

NAF has examined the issue more closely. Their test shows that a compact electric car consumes about 20% more power with the roof box.

– It is not surprising that the consumption of the electric car increases with the roof box, but it was higher than expected, says Nils Sødal, Senior Communications Advisor at NAF.

In order to have a basis of comparison, NAF also performed the same test on a gasoline-powered car. For a long time, it has been an unwritten rule that consumption increases by 5 to 10% when driving with a roof box. NAF has tested the increase in actual consumption and the question of whether consumption is also increasing on an electric car and a gas car.

Both test cars were Volkswagen e-Golf and Skoda Octavia gasoline powered cars.

Tested on highway

– When driving with something on the roof, consumption increases naturally. And if you drive a lot on high-speed motorways, your consumption increases even further. Many people drive with the roof box all year round, and it is good to know that it eats up more fuel and electricity, "said Nils Sødal in a press release.

The roof boxes used in the test were the Thule Motion XT XL and Skiguard 830 Touring. The test was carried out on a 7 km section of motorway, at a speed between 80 and 110 km / h. Simply a typical transport step for the cabin.

Increased by 19 percent

The test consisted of three trips. Each car was driven with two types of roof boxes and a trip had been made without a roof box. E-Golf was 80% loaded before each trip.

Without the roof box, the consumption was 1.79 kWh / mile on e-Golf, while the average consumption for e-Golf on both roof box tests was 2.125 kWh / mill. There is a 19% increase in consumption.

– E-Golf is one of the most popular electric cars in Norway and, with its already short reach, it is normal to know that the roof box significantly reduces autonomy, says Sødal.

Extra charge stop?

The consumption of Skoda Octavia without a roof box was 0.75 l / mile, as expected for winter road traffic.

For Skoda Octavia, the average consumption was 0.815 l / mil with the roof box. There is an increase in consumption of 9%.

– The conclusion is that consumption increases as expected on the station wagon. But driving with a roof box is very important for energy consumption if you drive a small electric car. Nils Sødal concludes: It is good to know that you know if you need to install a cargo stop on the way to the cabin.
