The shells of the frigate must be waterproof but quickly filled with water. Now, the armed forces are checking sister ships.


The Havarikommission describes the construction defect as "very serious" and states that this probably applies to the four other Nansen class frigates, as well as to the KNM "Helge Ingstad".

– 13 waterproof zones

On the Defense website, the frigates are still divided into 13 watertight zones. The vessel is designed to withstand a flange in the hull. But in reality, the water flowed freely between the parts after the collision and the vessel lost its stability.

The penetration of water occurred very quickly and came quite surprisingly to the crew.

"The ship has a propeller shaft that passes through more shots, it was assumed that it should do nothing for waterproofing, but it does," said SS Liseth of the Havarik Commission .

Although the damage in the hull indicates that three or four sections of the ship took the water, the hollow shaft of the propeller caused the water to fall into the more forward cavity of the vessel.

From the locker room, the water continues, forward and forward: to the rear engine room, where the diesel engines are located, and to the forward engine room, equipped with a gas turbine .

Had to evacuate

This meant that the ship was not behaving as well as the stability documentation and was leading the frigate to orderly evacuation.

"We still have a lot of work to do to find out what went from the narrow to the evacuation, they also lost control of the ship, we need to understand how it could happen," said Liseth.


The Havarikommission indicates in its report that the construction mistake needs to be corrected immediately. It is not yet known if other types of vessels from the same supplier, the Navantia Spanish shipyard, could have the same problem.

Defense: – Unknown problem

At a press conference held this afternoon, senior military officials said that they knew nothing about this problem before the accident. They say that it is too early to know if the deficiency can lead to a cause of compensation.

"We have taken temporary measures so that ships can navigate, and we are talking to Navantia and Defense Materials to find permanent solutions," said Navy Chief Nils Stensønes.

– What kind of temporary measures?

"A transparent material has been developed to repair such damage, there are procedures and crews are aware of it so that they can take action in case of water supply," Stensønes explains.

Defense chief Haakon Bruun-Hanssen said he did not consider the problem to be so serious that the ships had to be taken out of service.

As another immediate step, the Navy has focused on requirements for the use of AIS (Automatic Positioning System) in rough water.

KNM "Helge Ingstad" did not have an AIS system screwed during the accident.

"We explained the responsibility of using AIS systems when the waters are narrow and bustling," said Stensønes.
