One of these days, all your movies, music and photos will fit on a single SD memory card. Regardless of the size of the collection. This is the promise of the new specification for these memory cards announced by the SD Association, the entity that sets the certification standards for this type of memory cards.
This standard, called SD EXPRESS, defines the addition of PCI Express and NVMe interfaces to SD memory cards, which will greatly increase transfer speeds up to a theoretical maximum of 985 MB per second, almost double the transfer speed of the latest generation cards. This specification can be applied to future SDXC and SDHC cards, however, more connection pins will need to be added to support higher bandwidth.
At the same time, the new SD Ultra Capacity (SDUC) format was announced, which increases the maximum capacity of SD memory cards from the current 2TB (for SDXC cards) to an impressive 128TB. This would replace hard drives used in various applications, including mbad storage systems, NAS or desktop computers.
If we translate the capacity increase into digits, this will be equivalent to recording approximately 29,000 HD movies in a single 128TB memory card. If we take into account that a digital photo occupies 5 MB, the same card could hold more than 26 million photos, or 16 million music files that each occupy 8 MB.
Looking at True applications, these new SD memory cards with more capacity and speed can make life a lot easier for anyone who wants to create video content in 4K, 8K, or even in virtual reality.
