Alexandria Occasio-Cortez takes a break between interviews after winning the primaries in New York – 06/27 US Democratic Party New York for Congress surprised last Tuesday (26) by electing one leftist candidate and Latin origin instead of a candidate with 10 years of tenure, cited as the next president of the house. Elected, Alexandria Occasio-Cortez aged 28, may become the youngest woman to sit in the House of Representatives.

Alexandria won 57.5% of the vote ] Joe Crowley 56 years old, in the primaries for the Democratic representative of the New York District in the House. Crowley is already in his tenth term and 14 years ago, he did not face such strong competition within his party. But the left-wing agenda, aligned with that of the former Democratic presidential candidate of 2016, Bernie Sanders, defeated the traditional democrat. Alexandria worked in the Sanders campaign and advocated universal free, ending university education, reforming criminal justice and minority rights.

Daughter of a housekeeper from Puerto Rico she was born Bronx and worked as a waitress to help her mother. A graduate in economics and international relations from Boston University, Alexandria said she had chosen to run for office after seeing Donald Trump winning the presidential election.

According to her, black and other representatives are missing in the spheres of American power. The district in which it participates includes Queens and the Bronx, the two districts with the largest contingents of the ethnic minority of New York.
