The unemployment rate rises to 12.7% in May and reaches 13.2 million people

RIO – The unemployment rate for the quarter ended in May was 12.7%, reaching 13.2 million people, according to the National Sample Survey of Household (Pnad Continuous) IBGE. A year ago, it was 13.3%. In the three-month period ending February, which served as a basis for comparison, the rate was 12.6%, reaching 13.1 million workers. The data showed a decline in the number of jobs with a job portfolio compared to May last year – 1.5% or 483,000 people – compared with the previous quarter – 1,1 %, or 351,000 people.

Moreover, the number of workers without formal contract has increased: 5.7% compared to May 2017 – 597 000 more people – and 2.9% compared to previous quarter.

Last week, the Ministry of Labor released data on the formal labor market in May. There were 33,659 job offers. It was the fifth consecutive positive result in 2018.
