The Organization of American States (OAS) appointed a group of foreign experts to verify in loco (in the country itself) the situation of violence in Nicaragua. More than two months ago, there were daily clashes between protesters and police forces. It is estimated that more than 220 people were murdered in different cities of the country.
The group will be tasked with technically badyzing the lines of investigation and making recommendations on legal responsibility at different levels. The mission will also verify whether the autonomy and independence guarantees of the evaluations are respected.
For six months, the specialists must carry out the activities.
The Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts is composed of Amérigo Incalcaterra (Italy), Sofía Macher (Peru), Claudia Paz and Paz (Guatemala) and Pablo Parenti (Argentina). They were chosen by the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro.
In a statement, the OAS indicated that the Government of Nicaragua had authorized the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the General Secretariat of the Organization to carry out the work. According to the statement, the agreement was signed on May 30.
Since April 18, intense demonstrations have taken place on the streets of the main cities of Nicaragua. As of June 6, the cases were 1,337 wounded and 507 deprived of their liberty. Protesters complain of lack of freedom, repression, violence and demand the departure of President Daniel Ortega
