The Manaus Ministry of Health confirmed today (5) the first measles death in the Amazon since March this year. A 7-month-old boy who had not been vaccinated died on August 28 after experiencing symptoms such as fever, skin spots, coughing, and a runny nose. The child lived in the border area between the North and East zones, where most of the reported and confirmed cases are concentrated.
According to the record, there is yet another death in the investigation in Manaus – a 9-month-old girl who had not been vaccinated. As, in this case, blood collection for serology has not been done, confirmation should take a little longer. The investigation into the cause of death will be done by gathering information with family members. The death of a 19-year-old woman, who had already been the subject of an investigation for suspected measles, was dismissed by the secretariat.
Emergency
The city of Manaus decreed, last Tuesday (3), the emergency situation due to the measles epidemic. The decree is valid for 180 days and allows the immediate acquisition of goods and services needed in abnormal situations.
Since the beginning of March, the Amazonian capital has recorded 2,231 cases, of which 271 have been confirmed so far.
Campaign
In view of the increase in the number of cases, the Department of Health has anticipated the vaccination campaign initially planned for August. Children 6 months to 5 years old should receive the dose. Valter Campanato
